Westmount Quarry

As the name suggests this development is tucked into an abandoned quarry which presents a dramitic setting. The  dominating rock face with exposed granite and re-planted with indigenous trees and shrubs contrasts with the formal planting and high quality contemporary paving within the development itself.

There is sensitivity to the existing natural elements of the quarry which provide important wildlife corridors and exposed rock through the site. The rock stabilisation works include provision for planting and hydro-seeding to re-create a natural escarpment and backdrop to the new buildings.  It is proposed to introduce naturalised planting of trees and shrubs where the steepness of slope allows and along a newly created shelf running along the back of the quarry. This will increase the ecological value and extend the wildlife corridor.

As a contrast to the wild and natural appearance of the rock face, the podium is a series of linear formal spaces which continue as a rhythm to the podium edge. To reflect the stepping of the buildings, the podium also steps up towards the quarry rock face. Separating the podium from the rock face is a glazed stainless steel balustrade which prevents access onto the rock face whilst retaining its presence within the site. Stepping the podium levels and layering the formal bands of planting give the appearance of the landscape flowing out from the quarry between the buildings.

Paving materials have been selected for their high quality and natural colours, reflecting the proposed building facades and the existing rock face which remains a dominant feature of the site. A mixture of concrete and granite paving in a variety of tones and finishes together with the street furniture, subtly defines the public realm into its various uses without the need for kerbs and pavements.
