Sylvania

Published: Jun 2010

Planning consent has been granted for the redevelopment of the site of the Sylvania guest house overlooking St.Aubin's Bay.  The proposed development of 1 one and 7 two bedroom apartments is envisaged as a simple, glazed pavilion–type building. It is divided into its constituent apartments by floor and through vertical, white rendered walls which slice through the glazing and from which projecting balconies are introduced.

The south facing elevation is virtually entirely glazed to maximise solar gain, natural lighting and sea views. The top floor is recessed to minimise its impact from street level and to allow further terraces at high level. This element is further differentiated through the use of copper panels. A continuous overhanging roof, again clad in copper, provides solar shading and further articulation.

The two flank walls appear as white rendered panels from which slots have been cut and inserted with copper and opaque glass panels.  The rear elevation is articulated through the vertical stair and lift cores which slice through the symmetrical facade.

The building is positioned so as to allow pedestrian links around both sides of the building from the rear car park to the cycle way and beach beyond. A further single storey building is positioned in the parking courtyard to the rear. This sits perpendicular to the apartment building and provides stacked car parking spaces within a simple, white rendered envelope. The copper overhanging roof mirrors that employed on the main building.
