Located on the western fringe of St Helier town centre, with expansive view across the People’s Park to St Aubins Bay, Westmount Quarry presented a key opportunity for REGENERATION and urban renewal, whilst repairing and stabilising the escarpment behind, reinforcing the green backdrop and enhancing the ecological value of the wider site.
This HOLISTIC DESIGN approach, developed around the concept of splayed, stepping blocks extending outwards from the repaired granite rockface and set within a protected landscape bowl, comprises 247 new apartments ranging from 5 – 10 storeys, above a 260 space car park which occupies the lower, pre-excavated levels of the former quarry. Planted gardens between the blocks extend the landscape and ecology of the escarpment across the development, reinforcing and enhancing the landscape character of Westmount.
The form, massing and materiality of the individual apartment blocks emphasise the stepped nature of the development, with large south and west facing terraces providing shared amenity space with elevated views towards the bay. Angular cantilevered balconies, recalling the worked planes and faces of the former quarry, add a layer of depth and detail and help to create a distinct character and identity in this highly CONTEXTUAL response to place.
