HALKETT STREET REFURBISHMENT

Exciting developments are underway…

On August 9th, the Parish Roads Committee granted approval for the preliminary design scheme of the Halkett Street refurbishment. This long-anticipated refurbishment focuses on the stretch between Beresford Street and Hilgrove Street. The proposal takes into consideration the diverse character of St Helier and various other public realm projects implemented in recent years, such as Charing Cross and Cyril Le Marquand Court. Design development is ongoing in order to ensure accessibility for all within the space.

The proposed paving features varying shades of grey, natural tones, and Jersey pink with occasional darker tumble blocks reminiscent of the cobble paving used at the entrances. This blend of traditional and contemporary elements promises an appealing and textured visual experience. Street furniture will follow the language of the neighbouring streets: think Georgian-style cast iron benches with Iroko hardwood and modern freestanding GRP planters in matching hardwood. These movable pieces ensure a flexible and accommodating environment. Heritage Style Windsor Street lamp posts are accompanied by coordinating brackets for hanging baskets for native plants boasting vibrant seasonal colours that will thrive in Jersey’s coastal climate. Additionally, an updated central drainage system will be introduced that aligns with the drainage strategy of Market Street, replacing all existing gullies.

The journey towards revitalising Halkett Street is set to deliver a harmonious blend of past and present for a vibrant future.
