The project brief for Liberty Wharf was to convert a Grade 1 listed former abattoir complex into a new retail destination for St Helier. Given the sensitivity and importance of the listed structures, the approach taken to development was two-fold….
Firstly, in respect of the historic fabric, the strategy was to restore the existing fabric wherever possible and practicable, re-use as far as possible, existing building elements where removal was considered necessary, and to remove buildings or parts of buildings of limited architectural or historical significance in order to preserve historic buildings damaged by previous, poorly considered additions.
Secondly, in regard to new buildings and extensions, the approach was to create a dialogue of contrast with the restored elements by clearly expressing these modern interventions and thus add a new layer of detail to the site’s historical development.
Axis Mason has carried out numerous fit-out projects for a wide range of eating and retail operations within the historic Liberty Wharf development, including the SeaFish restaurant, George clothing store, Pasty Presto, Costa Coffee, Hotel Chocolat, Momo Fish & Beauty Spa and Rococo Arts & Gifts.
