The Blythswood Street development occupies a vacant plot of land within the Blythswood ‘New Town’ area of Glasgow city centre.
In keeping with the City Centre Strategic Development Framework, the aim of the scheme is to provide new homes that will add to the City’s growing residential community, adding vibrancy and activity and helping to breathe new life into the City Centre.
The area is characterised by its strong urban grid, vibrant mix of uses and predominant blond sandstone materiality. The proposed building, located at the pavement edge, will repair the streetscape to reinforce the existing city grid pattern. Massing and fenestration reflect the ordered scale and pattern of adjacent buildings with a clearly defined base, vertically articulated window openings and a set-back ‘attic storey’, ensuring an appropriate, CONTEXTUAL response to the setting.
Windows set within layered, deep reveals create depth and play with light and shadow on the elevation. The ground storey is defined with clearly expressed stone coursing joints and a contrasting granite base. Strong horizontal cornice lines and stone detailing at the second and top floors define datums and facade proportions related to adjacent properties. A further layer of enrichment on the primary facade is expressed through the architectural metalwork which takes reference from the metal railings around Blythswood Square. The lane elevation will be clad in brickwork to compliment the colours and tones of the stone cladding with recessed brick detailing, whilst projecting windows along the lane will offer oblique views to the street and animate the facade.
