The Bath Street redevelopment represents a significant mixed-use REGENERATION initiative in the heart of St Helier, transforming a former surface car park and a cluster of underperforming, deteriorating buildings into a vibrant new urban quarter. The scheme delivers 149 new homes at Merchants Square, a 122-bedroom Premier Inn hotel, new restaurant and retail provision, and a comprehensive programme of public realm enhancements.
Occupying a prominent town centre site bounded by Bath Street, Rue de Funchal and Halkett Place, the development has been carefully conceived to respond to the varied scale, character and urban grain of its context. The architectural approach repairs fragmented street frontages while introducing a new pedestrian connection across the site, linking Bath Street with Halkett Place through a series of distinct buildings arranged around landscaped communal spaces.
The residential component comprises a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments organised around a private courtyard garden, contributing high-quality new homes within a highly accessible town centre location. The inclusion of the Premier Inn hotel and ground floor restaurant introduces additional activity and employment, reinforcing town centre vitality and supporting Jersey’s visitor economy.
A central aspect of the scheme is the delivery of a high-quality public realm. Widened footways, improved pedestrian routes, integrated public art, street planting and extensive soft landscaping enhance connectivity and foster a strong SENSE OF PLACE. Biodiversity is embedded throughout the design, with features including a bio rain garden, pollinator-friendly planting, podium-level amenity spaces, and integrated bird nesting and bat roosting provision.
This HOLISTIC, DESIGN-LED approach has delivered a landmark development that successfully integrates residential, hospitality and public realm use, creating a more cohesive, attractive and environmentally responsive part of St Helier.
