Rock Health has redefined the local fitness landscape in Guernsey.
Guernsey Bowl in St. Sampson closed its doors to the public in 2017. This large site, which included a 24,000 sqft leisure facility along with extensive car parking and eight residential units, remained unoccupied until 2020, when new owners, Field Day Group, embarked on their vision to revitalise the site.
The client’s vision for ADAPTIVE RE-USE was to re-invent the building as the the Channel Islands’ first multi-use fitness centre and the Island’s premier destination for class-based training, sport and fitness brands. The entire site underwent a comprehensive refurbishment to provide a multi-let, high-end health and fitness hub. Boasting a suite of contemporary fitness studios, state-of-the-art changing facilities, a welcoming lounge area and ample parking, Rock Health now provides a holistic, well-being experience for the local community.
Internally, the design ethos has been to ensure a seamless blend of aesthetics and functionality; light-coloured timber panels and screens contrast with darker finishes to create a contemporary visual expression. Externally, the external envelope has been upgraded, together with extensive landscape improvements, to create a positive impact on the surrounding context and setting. Several significant interventions were also made to improve accessibility and inclusion, with the introduction of level or ramped access into all public areas.
The design also takes a responsible, sustainable approach to re-use and the refurbishment works have been certified as CARBON NEUTRAL through a detailed, embodied carbon assessment and carbon offsetting process with Construction Carbon UK.
