We recently obtained planning approval for an exciting, ADAPTIVE RE-USE project in the heart of St Helier. The regeneration of 40 King Street will be a contemporary re-interpretation of the historic building that previously occupied the site and was home to Jersey’s first telephone exchange.
The proposals include change of use from retail to residential use at first and second floors, a new zinc-clad mansard roof extension and an enhanced retail unit at ground floor. The existing building envelope will stripped back to the structural frame and a lightweight steel frame structure added at roof level to create an additional apartment floor.
In response to the historic setting of King Street, a new stone clad base has been introduced to frame a series of bronze anodised shopfronts, together with a series of feature stone framed bays at first floor that reflect the traditional detailing of retail frontages in the surrounding streets. A unique public art installation will be incorporated at second floor, in the form of a ceramic frieze depicting binary and morse code as used in the pioneering days of early telephony.
The result will be a more refined, crafted and CONTEXTUAL building that will help to restore the streetscape and will offer a timeless and positive contribution to the character of the town centre.
